VEDEN VIRE (The Frequency of Water) is an art–research project into the destruction of Finland’s waters. Drawing on runo-tradition, hydrofeminist theory, and ecomusicology, it reimagines rivers not as resources, but as co- composers, carriers of cultural memory. The project combines sound art, ecological research, and mythic re-interpretation to explore how listening can function as a tool for ecological connection and cultural change — a method of care, resistance, and ecological imagination. The first phase premiered at Berlin’s Spatial Festival 2025 (Funkhaus), supported by Kone Foundation, EU Voice, Goethe-Institut, Svenska Kulturfonden, and Konstsamfundet. A 20-minute libretto of Karelian origin spells, endangered river sounds, kantele, and 4DSOUND spatial audio was performed before an audience of over 800. Live audio was streamed directly from North Karelia’s Anninkoski River via a custom-built RiverSync sensor — transforming the river into an active performer.
